Koko Black

A quick morning tea break before a day of shopping led us to Strand Arcade in the former Bon Bon Cafe site, in search of a hot chocolate to die for!

Food:
We opted for 2 drinks and a quick bite to eat. I had the light Belgian hot chocolate, which had been double brewed for two hours according to their signature recipe, so I was quite excited to try it! Expecting a rich and flavoursome chocolate, I was left feeling slightly disappointed, as the Light option entailed a more bitter and less rich version of the classic treat. My mum on the other hand would have preferred a less sweet drink, but she ordered the Baby Hot Chocolate, a miniature version of the Belgian hot chocolate that was rich and flavourful, but not to her liking.

We also ordered the chocolate bread with seeds, raisins, butter and hazelnut spread, and the bread impressed us both! It was freshly baked and warm, and looked more like a scone rather than slices of bread, so a thinner cut would have been preferable. It was perfect on its own without the condiments, and the chocolate flavour shone through, with melted chocolate pieces that make the texture all the more enjoyable. For the ultimate taste experience, we sampled some of the hazelnut spread, but we both found it was better plain.

Ambience:
The cafe is located at the Pitt Street side of Strand Arcade, and is accessed by the spiral staircase inside the store. This was blocked off by a sign, which made us think it was shut, but after asking the man at the chocolate counter, he assured us it was open and we ventured down. The layout is the same as the previous cafe, and there is ample seating, with comfy cushion chairs that made for a nice experience! The staff were friendly and helpful, and the menu was quite expansive, and we both wanted to come back to try the high tea option to sample some more of their delicious looking desserts and savoury items.

Overall:
While they haven’t quite mastered the art of the hot chocolate (or maybe need better descriptions to match the hot chocolate to taste preferences), the snacks at Koko Black left us wanting more, and we’ll definitely be back again to try the rest of their menu!
