For a monthly reunion and catchup with university friends, Mum took a ferry over to Manly to enjoy some excellent food and drinks with a view at Hugo’s.
The group ordered 3 pizzas as part of the half-price special – the pumpkin, fig and lamb options. All of the pizza were very well enjoyed! The star of the three for Mum was the slow cooked lamb, with potato, fetta, rocket, olives, capsicum, onion and chilli. It was incredibly flavoursome, and had a touch of spice, with the sprinkle of rocket on top adding a touch of green goodness to the pizza.
The pumpkin was also well liked, with large pieces of roasted pumpkin that was tender and juicy, a subtle taste of zucchini, sweet and sour onions, gorgonzola and pine nuts. Finally, the fig pizza was very unique, and added some sweet freshness with whole fig slices, crispy pancetta, gorgonzola, tomato and bazil. They also grabbed a side salad of rocket, pear and parmesan, which everyone enjoyed, particularly the pear pieces, and topped with a generous helping of parmesan.
For dessert, to finish off, Mum ordered a decadent Belgian chocolate mousse cake with black cherries and vanilla bean ice cream. Each mouthful was amazing and rich, and she found it hard to decide whether it should be eaten in one mouthful, or to taste each individual texture and flavour separately. Her friend also ordered the Trio of Gelato, which came with Fig and Pistachio, Belgian Chocolate and Boysenberry. All of the gelato flavours were tasty but her favourite was the fig and pistachio, as she always enjoys pistachio and the addition of the fig not only added another flavour but gave it an interesting texture.
To accompany their meal and enjoy the lazy Monday afternoon, the group ordered a bottle of Pimms, which was light and refreshing. One of her friends also ordered a hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was exceptional and beautifully presented! It was not overly sweet and the addition of the grated chocolate added a lovely richness. They also received four complementary glasses of White Cosmopolitans, which was a lovely touch.
The weather was beautiful, and the group took advantage of it by sitting on the verandah to soak up the rays and the picturesque water. There was also ample seating close to the water as well. Service was excellent, as the staff were very attentive and friendly and quick to top up water, clear plates and take orders for everyone dining there. The meals also came out quickly, and were beautifully presented. The restaurant is also very close to the ferry wharf, and it’s amazing to watch the ferries come in as you sit at the restaurant.
Mum and her friends had a wonderful afternoon at Hugos with great food and even better company! I’ll definitely have to take a trip up to the Northern Beaches to sample the wonderful fare at Hugos when it warms up a bit!
VERDICT: 4 or 4.5/5
