The Grounds of Alexandria is one of the most picturesque eateries in Sydney, with its luscious green courtyard, cute animal enclosure and a relaxed and rustic vibe! We were dying to try some delicious of their food, so we headed over after uni!
I opted for the Atlantic Salmon Crudo, which was salmon pieces served raw, with avocado, ricotta, chilli, black sesame, snow pea tendrils and lemon. At first I was intrigued with the unfamiliar flavours, and found it very rich and creamy. However, a bite with salmon, avocado and a few salad tendrils was so flavourful and fresh, and it was a perfect healthy and refreshing lunch! The one component I didn’t love was the ricotta ‘sauce’, as I felt it was too heavy and unnecessary to the dish, but without it, it was a definite winner!
I also tried some of the ‘Ground’ Burger, which was a ground beef brisket patty served on a toasted brioche bun, with lettuce, dill and mayo and a side of crunchy battered chips! It was delicious, as the patty was perfectly cooked, and the bun soft, fluffy and light. The sauce was thinly spread, and not overwhelming, and the chips were very crunchy, just as the name promised! It was easily one of the best burgers I’ve had in a while.
Finally, we had a freshly squeezed pineapple, watermelon and passionfruit juice with a lashing of mint. It was beautifully presented with a watermelon french, and was quickly finished before the meal even arrived – it was that good!
As it was Melbourne Cup day, we had to wait for about 20 minutes before a table was vacant, so we walked around the cafe and its surrounds, and explored the lovely scenery! Don’t miss saying hi to Kevin Bacon, the famous pig, and checking out the rainbow roses at the florist nearby. When we were finally seated it was hard to decide what to order, but service was fairly slow, and we saw food piling up on the counter waiting to be handed out to tables.
Lunch at The Grounds is truly an experience not to be missed! Avoid peak times, but the burger was a real highlight, and we’ll be back soon for some of their pastries and desserts in the take-away section for sure!
