As part of the Vino Paradiso Wine Festival at The Rocks over this weekend, we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to participate in a Masterclass. We selected the cheese and wine pairing option, ready to sample some amazing wines chosen to complement some unique cheeses!
The wines from our class were sourced from Landhaus Wines, a winery operating in the Barossa Valley. We were pleasantly surprised by the rich floral notes and mildness of each of the wines, as the flavour shone through, and they didn’t overwhelm the palette, as some wines often can when being paired with cheese. We also enjoyed sampling 4 different cheeses that paired along with the wines. These were carefully selected by Valerie from The Smelly Cheese Shop in Adelaide, and they were varied and flavoursome in their own unique ways.
One of the highlights was Landhaus’s 2015 Grenache, and to compliment this, a soft cheese washed with rosé was selected, which was absolutely divine. The pairing was perfect, as the cheese had definite notes of rose, and the pink tinged rind was contrasted with the soft and sweet interior. The grenache was similarly light and beautifully coloured, and each sip, accompanied by a taste of the cheese, showcased why the flavours marry together beautifully.
The final pairing was also well liked, between the 2015 Arneis and the gorgonzola dolce. The unique saltiness of the gorgonzola is difficult to pair with the sweeter notes of the wines, and so a completely contrasting white wine with floral notes was selected. We also enjoyed hearing the story of how this cheese was initially created! As the tale goes, a man in France left milk out that grew a special type of mould, and after trying the curd that originated from this milk, the unique tanginess and saltiness of the gorgonzola cheese was born.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the intimate experience, as we were able to sample some amazing wine and cheese pairings and learn from some of the best in the business, and would definitely take a Kingfisher VP masterclass again! The Vino Paradiso festival runs from the 6th to the 8th of November, so be sure to check it out over the weekend.
