After hearing that there was an amazing Malaysian food stall in the upper area of Berry Square International Food Court, we absolutely had to try it for ourselves!
We ordered two dishes, the Hainanese Chicken Rice, which is a Malaysian staple, and the Rice with Curry Chicken (we actually ordered Roti, but due to a miscommunication, received the rice version of the dish). The curry was very delicious, with tender pieces of chicken cooked in a rich, flavourful and lightly spiced sauce. I especially loved the soft pieces of potato, and it was really enjoyable to eat.
However, the chicken rice didn’t quite hit the mark, as the chicken was quite dry, and the rice was fairly plain. I always prefer the rice used in chicken rice dishes to be cooked in chicken soup or stock, but that flavour was somewhat lacking. If I was to order this dish again, I’d get it with chicken thigh rather than breast, and ask for some chicken rice chillies as well.
Orders are placed at the counter, and your number is called when your meal is ready for you to collect. The restaurant is bustling, so expect to wait at least 15-20 minutes for your meal. However, seating was pretty easy to find, and it was nice to see so many busy people enjoying a quick bite of Malaysian cuisine.
May’s Laksa House is a good option for Malaysian in the North Sydney area. We’d definitely order the curry chicken again, but as the name suggests, their speciality lies in Laksa and other Malaysian dishes, so skip the Chicken Rice and order a Laksa instead!
