On a hot day, we needed a refreshing and light meal, so we were very glad to be able to try Mappen, a self-serve ramen noodle house on George Street!
We ordered two dishes – the Mt. Beef, off the new summer menu, and the Rainbow Udon, a beautiful rainbow ramen dish with different accompaniments that makes for a great Instagram pic! The Mt. Beef had delicious and tender pieces of stewed slice beef and soba noodles with shallot, sliced onion, dried seaweed, sesame seed and a dipping sauce.
We drizzled the sauce over the dish and really enjoyed the beef pieces soaked in the sauce. The noodles were quite filling and savoury, and it was overall a very refreshing dish for a summers’ day! This dish also comes in a spicy variety for those who prefer a kick to their dish, so be sure to order that if you like your ramen hot!
The second meal we had, the Rainbow Udon, was a Washoku Lovers members’ special for $9.90. It came in 7 different little containers for us to assemble, along with a bowl of udon noodles in soup. We especially loved the corn and the seaweed out of all the accompaniments.
It was so fun to see it all come together, and the noodles were so soft and flavoursome, and a real treat to eat! I especially enjoyed the soft poached egg that was still slightly runny, as pouring that over the noodles added so much flavour and texture.
Washoku Lovers members can show their membership card and receive an Apple Cider drink along with the Rainbow Udon meal. We absolutely loved it – it was so refreshing and cold, and the sweetness was great to have alongside the tempura snacks that we had. We also tried the green tea milkshake, which had a very interesting texture, and a strong leafy tea flavour – great for lovers of green tea treats!
Mappen is very conveniently located a short walk from Town Hall Station, just along from the George St Cinemas. As the restaurant has a self serve concept, service is quite fast, as you pick which menu item you want, grab some snacks and tempura treats while you wait on a separate tray, and then receive your dish and pay for your meal.
There’s plenty of seating inside the restaurant, but it was all full when we went, so be sure to get there during a non-peak period if you want a seat! The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and Yuri from Washoku lovers was there to explain the menu items to us and give us some delicious recommendations, which we really appreciated!
For a quick and inexpensive, yet value for money meal, head to Mappen in the city and try some of their delicious Ramen dishes. They have something for everyone, and especially with the amazing Rainbow Udon deal for Washoku Lovers members, you can’t go wrong with a meal at Mappen!
