After Reynold’s Masterchef debut, we were instantly won over by his fabulous creations, so we had to go and check them out at his new restaurant, KOI Dessert Bar in Chippendale.
We decided to go all out and grab the dessert tasting menu, which came with 3 desserts to share between the three of us. The first course was apple with apple wood ice cream, artichoke crisp, brown butter crumbs, elderflower jelly and dulce. It was exquisitely presented, and we loved the poached apple and crumb elements, with the jelly adding a fancy touch, and great silky texture as well.
The second dish was pistachio mousse, caramel gel, white chocolate matcha dulce cremeux, pistachio sponge, matcha moss, apple blossom jelly, nitro lime and yoghurt and green apple. There were lots of contrasting flavours and textures, which made for a very unique dish! I liked the moss especially, as while I’m not normally a huge fan of matcha, I found the balance just right, and it added a great element to the dish.
Finally, we finished off with the beetroot, coconut yogurt, passion fruit sphere and rose. While the beetroot ice cream component wasn’t for me, the hydrated yoghurt was so amazing – the coconut yoghurt had been frozen into bite sized pieces that were so refreshing and great to snack on, and with another flavour of ice-cream, this would’ve been the dish of the day.
Just a short walk away from Central Station, Koi is conveniently located near Spice Alley and Central Park, so it’s quite easy to find. The bottom part sells smaller cakes and treats, and the upper section is where the fine dining-esque venue is. There’s plenty of seating around the windows and in the interior too. The staff were friendly and indulged us in our million photos of the coffee – even pouring some extra liquid nitrogen to help us get that perfect shot. They were also happy to hear feedback about the dishes, which was great!
The Apple inspired menu is so unique and creative, and it’s always fun seeing Reynold’s creations come to life! Each of the dishes at KOI are beautifully presented with expertly crafted flavours and textures, which will leave you wanting more, so head on over and check them out!
